Since 2019, Almea Matris Alumni, the Alumni Association of the Università di Bologna, has awarded Alma Mater Awards to graduates who have brought prestige to the University by way of their careers. Among the various prizes dedicated to the various disciplines is the Marconi Medal for the engineering & technology category, which was awarded this year to Silvia Gaiani “for her deep passion for high-performance materials. With her research into titanium alloys, materials resistant to high temperatures, she has made a significant contribution to the growth of Motor Valley, ensuring the innovation and quality of applications for the automotive and motorsport sectors”.

A leader in the production of exhausts and safety structures for various international motorsport championships, Vsystem is a standout firm within Motor Valley. The company supplies several Formula teams with halos and exhausts, while also participating in various international motorsport championships, from NASCAR in the US to the World Endurance Championship.

In front of 300 attendees, lecturers and new graduates who have excelled in their studies, Gaiani spoke about her passion for mechanics, motorcycling and motorsport, highlighting just how important it is to back up one’s choices with continuous training, commitment and passion. In closing her speech, which also touched on some of the fundamentals for the new generation, from the importance of a university pathway as a key to the future to the continuous pursuit of knowledge, Gaiani asked:

“What is your dream job? Keep asking yourself that to guide your choices and ensure that the dream becomes reality. You’ll see that your aspirations will constantly change; by following them, you will be great professionals and, above all, happier people.”

Who is Silvia Gaiani
The CEO of Vsystem, Gaiani is Bolognese by birth but now a resident of Formigine. A Mechanical Engineering graduate of the Università di Bologna, she completed her Research Doctorate at the Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, focusing on the applications of high mechanics and automotive design & technology. After gaining professional experience in Italy and abroad, at Ducati Motor Holding in Borgo Panigale and Akrapovič d.d. in Slovenia, and forming her own consultancy firm, Gaiani returned ‘home’ as manager of Veca Group in Soliera, with the aim of founding Vsystem, a new company in the Group specialising in the production of exhaust systems and safety-related structural parts for motorsport, which was founded in 2013. Gaiani’s university studies, her training at the IIS Aldini Valeriani, where she has also taught, and her passion for research into titanium alloys and materials resistant to high temperatures for use in high-performance sectors like motorsport and aerospace have all played a fundamental role in shaping her career, at the heart of Motor Valley.
